...A God Drawn to Our Weakness...

“For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: That no flesh should glory in his presence.”
- 1 Cor 1:26-29

Clearly, God detests the boast of human flesh and pride. That was the conclusion of Paul’s discourse about the manner of our calling in God. The issue is not (and has never been) the wisdom or wealth of man, for God calls some wealthy, some noble, and some strong…
Observe that he said, ‘how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called…’ .
In essence, some wise, some noble, some mighty were called. Therefore, God called both the weak and strong, both the wise and the foolish. The criterion is more of a mental disposition than a state in life. If God finds that disposition in the wealthy, that’s His choice. If He finds it in the poor, that again will be His choice. Their wealth or otherwise notwithstanding.

What disposition do we refer to here? The acknowledgment that you need God. It’s a deep sense of dependence on the mercy of God as against your human abilities. It’s the surrender of human pride and confidence to the invisible, unseen hand of God as sovereign in the affairs of men.
